Now - Here - This

On my way to a morning bike ride, I was listening to the radio program On Being with Krista Tippett.  Krista was interviewing Father Greg Boyle about his book "The Calling of Delight" about his experiences with gangs, service and kinship.  It was a very interesting discussion about community and connection.  Father Boyle talked about one of his mantras that he took from a Broadway play:  "Now. Here. This."   Be present in the moment.  Be aware and thankful for the connection.  This really resonates with me so wanted to share.

As I rode with Jaime this morning I made a point to pay attention: cold hands and toes, bright sun warming the black of my biking pants, easy conversations catching up, shoes clipped in and out, turkey buzzards swarming on carrion, pedals turning, wind increasing, light traffic, gloves gripping a water bottle for sips of water, and finally gliding back to a stop at Brushy Creek Park.  Thanks to all that came out for our club ride.

Father Greg Boyle used the following poem in his book and I found it quite lovely:

 With That Moon Language
Admit something: Everyone you see, you say to them, "Love me."
Of course you do not do this out loud, otherwise someone would call the cops.
Still though, think about this, this great pull in us to connect. Why not become the one who lives with a full moon in each eye that is always saying, with that sweet moon language, What every other eye in this world is dying to hear?

I bid you all focus: now - here - this.
